Can a personal representative be a beneficiary?

Attorney Gadi Zohar explains:

The short answer is yes. It’s very common for a personal representative to be the beneficiary, whether that person is an executor of the will, administrator of an estate, or a trustee of a trust. It is very common. Oftentimes people wonder about that or have concerns. It’s quite common. It’s usually not a problem at all.

It’s usually quite efficient. And on rare occasions where something like litigation comes up, someone may need an attorney to represent them as a beneficiary separately from a trustee. Those are very rare occasions, and I’d say 99% of the cases where a person is a beneficiary and a trustee, executor, or administrator, it is not a problem at all.
