What is a successor trustee?

The successor trustee is a person whom you designate while you’re living to take over management of your assets once you either become incapacitated or when you pass away. That person’s job is to manage those assets for the benefit of your beneficiaries and eventually to pass along those assets to the beneficiary.

You should choose that person very carefully, however, because that is a lot of power over your property.
